I received this email via Agade listserv–it said that students could get a nice, dandy discount on a two volume Brill set I’d love to own…after the discount it would be an incredible bargain at $200.  What kind of students is Brill targeting?  Maybe people in an investment banking MBA or professional sports stars training camp?  Would they really like a book on art in the ancient Near East?  Seriously…

On Art in the Ancient Near East

useful to scholars and students interested in art history, cultural
studies, architecture, archaeology, language, and ethnography of
ancient Mesopotamia and its surrounding areas. Each volume may be
purchased separately or as a set.

How about a nice discount on some other outrageously priced Brill titles, like DNWSI?

I second that, Doug!

And, you’re absolutely right, Charles, I don’t think poor students like me are going to be able to shell out that much cash, even if it is reduced, for this type of book.

I guess they figured they’ve lost many of the libraries for this one because these are after all REPRINTS OF THINGS THEY ALREADY HOLD (calm down Chuck!).

Any review failing to mention this absurd price is negligent.

Thanks for posting this. I often wish someone would call out publishers like Brill for this sort of crap. “I have a great idea. Let’s publish b.a. books and make them so expensive that NO ONE can afford them.” I’m very thankful for publishers like Baker Academic who take $150 books and publish them for $30.
